Why polymer clay sticks in cutters
Raw polymer clay is tacky, and it stays with whatever it grips hardest. On paper or a matte mat the slab has nothing to hold on to, so it rides up inside the cutter. Warm, over-soft clay makes this worse because it stretches instead of cutting. Detailed shapes with narrow inside corners give the clay more wall to cling to.
7 fixes, in the order to try them
| Fix | How to do it | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Glossy work surface | Cut on ceramic tile or glass, and smooth the slab down first | The biggest single change. Clay stuck to the surface does not stick in the cutter |
| Firmer, cooler clay | Let soft clay rest, or put the slab and cutters in the freezer for a few minutes | Do not leave it long. Over-chilled clay can turn brittle |
| Wiggle before lifting | Press straight down, move the cutter a hair from side to side, lift straight up | Often enough on its own for simple shapes |
| Cornstarch | Brush a very light dusting onto the clay with a soft, fluffy brush | A cutter dipped in powder picks up clumps and leaves piles on the clay |
| Plastic wrap | Lay wrap smoothly over the slab, cut through it, peel the wrap, lift the cutter | Also rounds the edge, so skip it when you want a crisp one |
| Water mist | Give the inside of the cutter one light spritz | Just enough to reduce friction. Do not soak it |
| Clean cutters | Wipe with a damp cloth or baby wipe, and brush residue out of corners | Old clay on the cutter wall grabs new clay |
Cornstarch: on the clay or on the cutter
Both are used. Sculpey suggests dusting the cutter and tapping off the excess. The Blue Bottle Tree recommends brushing the powder onto the clay instead, because a dipped cutter carries too much. Either way the rule is the same: use as little as you can. A light dusting does not need to be removed before baking. Baby powder works in place of cornstarch.
Sticking in 3D printed cutters
A printed cutter can be any shape, which is the point of making your own, and detailed shapes are where clay gets trapped. If the clay always sticks at the same inside corner or narrow channel, treat it as a design problem as well as a technique problem.
- Open up tight inside corners and narrow gaps in the artwork before you make the cutter.
- Make the shape a little larger. Detail that works at 40 mm can be too fine at 15 mm.
- Print one cutter and test it on scrap clay before you print a set.

What to avoid
- Cutting on paper. Bake on paper, but cut on tile or glass.
- Dipping the cutter into a pile of cornstarch.
- Leaving clay in the freezer until it is hard.
- Wetting the cutter until water pools on the clay.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Why does my polymer clay stick to the cutter?
- Because it is gripping the cutter harder than the surface underneath. Cut on a glossy tile or glass, press the slab down first, and work with clay that is cool and firm.
- Can I use cornstarch on polymer clay?
- Yes. Brush a very light dusting onto the clay. Applied lightly, it does not need to be removed before baking.
- Can I use baby powder instead of cornstarch?
- Yes. Sculpey lists both as release agents for cutters.
- Should I chill polymer clay before cutting?
- A few minutes in the freezer firms up soft clay and helps it release cleanly. Do not leave it long, because over-chilled clay can become brittle.
- Does plastic wrap change the shape of the cut?
- Slightly. It compresses the clay at the edge, which gives a smooth, rounded edge instead of a square one.
